On this page, we give details of some of the sexual health support services available to people from African communities living in Sheffield.

 
1) Sheffield Contraception and Sexual Health Service (SCaSH)

scashThe Sheffield Contraception and Sexual Health Clinic provides a free and confidential sexual health advice and support service including contraception provision and STI testing. It is based in the Central Health Clinic on Mulberry Street.

The service has drop in clinics Monday to Friday so you do not have to make an appointment. You can also call them for advice.

Their telephone numbers are 0114 271 6816 to make an appointment and 0114 271 8840 to speak with a clinic worker for advice and guidance.

2) Sheffield GUM (Genito-Urinary) Clinic

gumIf you are concerned about HIV, Hepatitis or other Sexually Transmitted Infections, you can get free information, advice, testing and treatment at the Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic. This clinic is based in the Hallamshire Hospital – you will find the clinic opposite the Minor Injuries Unit on the corner of Claremont Place and the hospital’s ‘B’ Road.

Services available for Black African patients 
  •  Same day testing for HIV

  •  Pre test discussion for HIV testing

  •  Full diagnostic screening for sexually transmitted infections

  •  Psychology referral where appropriate

  •  Referral /signposting to other services

  •  Free treatment

  •  Free condoms/lube

  •  Condom assessment

  •  Risk reduction/ health promotion intervention

  •  Interpreting service

  •  Vaccinations/assessment

  •  Continuing care for HIV

  •  Information leaflets

  • Walk-in service

3) The Forge Centre

forge teamThe specialist staff at the Forge Centre provide Social Work support, advice and counselling for people affected by HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C. They can also arrange confidential HIV or Hepatitis testing.

The Forge Centre is based at 6 Claremont Place which is near to the Hallamshire Hospital. Telephone 0114 226 1142

They are open Mon to Thurs 8.45am to 5.15pm and Fri 8.45am to 4.45pm

4) Shield

shieldShield is a voluntary charitable organisation that offers a support service for people who are living with or are affected by HIV.

They provide:-

  • Information and support
  • groups, social activities and lunch clubs
  • a drop-in facility
  • complimentary therapies

5) Asylum Seeker Health Clinic

The Asylum Seeker Health Clinic is an NHS GP practice especially and only for asylum seekers in Sheffield. The staff include doctors, nurses, family support workers, a councillor and a clinical psychologist.  

They provide free health care for asylum seekers living in Sheffield and offer a range of support services on a variety of health issues which includes sexual health.

The Asylum Seeker Health Clinic is based within the Central Health Clinic, 1 Mulberry Street.

6) Sheffield City GP Health Centre

one medicareThe Sheffield City GP Health Centre offers healthcare to anyone in Sheffield. Any member of the public can simply walk in and see adoctor or nurse at the Centre or phone and book an appointment in advance. You do not need to register as a patient.

The Centre is open 365 days a year between 8.00am and 8.00pm.

As well as seeing a doctor or nurse about any health related matter, you can also get advice and treatment on sexual helath issues including contraception choices.

7) African AIDS Helpline

african helpline The national African AIDS Helpline provides free and confidential help and advice on HIV and AIDS plus information on HIV testing, treatment and sexual health.

All the helpline advisors are African and can speak to you in:
